The Yorkshire Exmoor Pony Trust (YEPT) looks after a herd of more than 40 Exmoor ponies that graze on nature reserves across the county.
The ponies are very hardy and thrive on the tussocky grasses and saplings that threaten to swamp the smaller wildflowers and the insects that depend on them.
The ponies are helping to conserve the wildflowers that grow in the reserve's lowland heathland.
The darker of the two ponies at Allerthorpe is Don Quixote, the YEPT's original herd stallion, now over 20 years old. The lighter one is Pheasant,
whose fourth foal will be born on Allerthorpe Common this year. Exmoor ponies are an endangered breed. The Trust breeds a small number of good quality foals each year
and it is hoped that many of the youngsters will become riding ponies in the future.
If you would like to help YEPT to look after the ponies around Allerthorpe Common or if you are interested in
sponsoring an Exmoor pony like those grazing here, please do get in touch.
PLEASE DO NOT FEED THE EXMOOR PONIES
